A friend of mine who lived on the first floor of an apartment building really wanted to get Dish Network. He had a patio that was for his "exclusive use" (meaning he had the right to set up a satellite dish outside). There was just one small problem... The patio was on the North side of the apartment. And, as we all know, satellite dishes require a clear view of the Southern sky. Damn. Guess he's out of luck, right? Wrong! Luckily, he had a large window on the southern side of the house. So, we thought, "what if it were possible to mount the satellite dish indoors..." Well, we did a little checking and it turns out it is possible to set up a satellite dish inside the house. Now, regular windows won't work for this. You'll have to (temporarily) replace the window with a plastic window. Also, it isn't recommended to do this if you will have satellite Internet and may have people or other objects moving through your signal. Satellite Internet requires sending in addition to receiving, and, as you can imagine, the satellite signal is narrowest at its source (i.e. your antenna). If anything comes between your satellite dish and the satellite, it could block out 100% of the signal. Now, I'm embarrassed to say we're not too handy with tools and stuff. So, we hired some professionals to do the replacing of the window. We also had a special mount made that would allow the satellite to be positioned on the window pan upside-down (as a space saver).
